Loveless Manga Volume 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — Wrote by Micah on May 19th, 2008

The Loveless story begins with Ritsuka Aoyagi attending a new school were he meets Yuiko Hawatari, who is a silly girl who talks in the third person (for example she’ll say: “Yuiko loves deep fried bread” when she’s talking about herself). It takes Ritsuka a while to warm up to her but he eventually does.

After his first day of school, he meets Soubi Agatsuma, a friend of his deceased brother Seimei. Together they go make memories (something that is really important to Ritsuka). While at the park taking pictures they run into the fighter unit Breathless, who were ordered to retrieve Ritsuka. Soubi is also a fighter unit and the two engage in a battle by words spell but it ends quickly with Breathless retreating (due to words used by Soubi for them to retreat).

In the next chapter Soubi meets Ritsuka after school, again and he is introduced to Yuiko. The three of them go to Yuiko’s house and have an after school snack. While walking home with Soubi, Ritsuka learns about fighter units and sacrifices. The two are paired together and their words are their weapons. Ritsuka is the sacrifice and Soubi is the fighter unit. The sacrifice receives all the pain and damage during battles. When the sacrifice is destroyed the battle is over. Soubi also tells Ritsuka that he loves him (This has an effect on Ritsuka. These are words he probably hasn’t heard to often said to him. He particularly, probably, never heard these words from his mother). He also asks Ritsuka if he has located Seimei’s will? As soon as Ritsuka gets home he searches for the will. He finds it on the computer. In it he learns that his brother was murdered by Septimal Moon and he has left his fighter unit Soubi for him. This last part upsets Ritsuka greatly. It appears as if nothing belongs to him. The next day at school Ritsuka runs into the Breathless pair and they are ready to fight another battle.

Soubi and Ritsuka battle the Breathless pair. Restrictions are placed on both the sacrifices (Ritsuka and Ai) but it is Soubi and Ritsuka who win the battle. Soubi carries the 2 defeated Breathless away. Ritsuka is a bit shaken by the ordeal and by the fact that Soubi continually says he loves him. These kind words really do a number on our Ritsuka (when said by some who really means it. I guess it would have effect on the receiver).

We are introduced to Yayoi Shioiri in chapter 4. He is in the same grade as Ritsuka and Yuiko. He has a crush on Yuiko and is bothered by the relationship that Ritsuka and Yuiko have (he had asked Yuiko to go out with him and she said she could not date a short person). He is surprise that she is hanging around Ritsuka because Ritsuka is also short like him. It is during this chapter that we learn a few more details about Soubi. He is a college student studying Japanese art. During one of his after school visits with Ritsuka he gives him a cell phone (so they can always be connected). Later that night Soubi arrives at Ritsuka’s and asks him to pierce his “virgin” ears. Ritsuka is a little afraid to perform this hole punching activity but manages to get enough courage to fulfill Soubi’s request. Afterwards, it is revealed that Soubi knows about Septimal Moon but due to orders high up he can not reveal them to Ritsuka. Ritsuka doesn’t like to hear this and demands Soubi leaves his room and not to show up for Parent’s Day the following day. He doesn’t what to see Soubi. It is to much for him to take (All these new emotions are flooding Ritsuka how will he handle it). Neither Ritsuka’s father nor Soubi showed up for Parent’s Day. Afterwards, Yuiko and Ritsuka decide to make memories and Yayoi invites himself to come along to Kinuta Park. Just as they are about to make the final arrangements, Ritsuka receives a call. It’s Soubi! Ritsuka tells Yuiko that he will call her later and runs to the front of the school where Soubi is waiting. Together Ritsuka and Soubi leave to make more memories.
